A capture-recapture experiment was performed to investigate dispersion and movement patterns of adult Asian shore crabs (Hemigrapsus takanoi), invasive to the area. An initial sample of crabs was collected in a shallow bay in Stenungsund. The crabs were divided into four groups and marked A-D with permanent markers. Each group were then released in four adjacent bays. In a few weeks, a new sample of crabs will be collected from the area and checked for markings. By connecting marked individuals from the second sampling to the initial bay where released, we can obtain an estimated moving pattern in the crab population. From these results, an estimate of the total population size can also be obtained by dividing the number of marked individuals by the proportion of marked individuals in the second sample.
